Gherkins are a versatile product simply because of all the different ways in which the fruit is to be found. For instance: gherkins can be eaten whole or they can be sliced or cut lengthwise. Then there are pickled gherkins: extra large gherkins that are regarded as a speciality in some markets. Yet other variants in the range are smooth or prickly.
Internal and external quality
Gherkins are grown indoors as well as outdoors and horizontally as well as vertically. Rijk Zwaan selects its gherkins not only on a good external presentation but also on excellent internal qualities. For growers we aim for a good yield and strong plants with good stamina. And finally, mechanical harvesting demands a specific crop type.

On the ever larger nurseries, cost savings play an increasingly large part and is the reason why mechanical harvesting is seen more and more as the norm. We play into that with specific varieties.
